Original German army soldbuch to Helmut Penzlin. Predominantly serving with two units 8.Kp./Gren.Regt.6 and Gren.Ers.U.Ausb.Btl.65.
Grenadier Regiment 16 raised after the reorganisation of the 16th Infantry Division in Crete at the end of 1942. Regiments were deployed in combat groups on the Aegean Islands. It is worth noting here, that he was fully complimented with full DAK outfit as recorded in his SB. In 1944 he was transferred out of Greece and served with the latter unit above. They were placed in coastal alert duties in the Netherlands. The unit was incorporated into the 1222 Volksgrenadier Regiment which saw heavy combat during Operation Market Garden. The unit was reformed from October 1944 and served under the command of the LXXXVI AK. Penzlin would go on to fight at Venlo during the battle of the Bulge. From March 1945 he was engaged in combat against the British 2nd Army in Wessel. The unit was destroyed during Operation Varsity. Remains of the unit were pushed into the Ruhr pocket where they made their last stand and eventually surrendered as the war ended. During his service Penzlin was awarded the ISA, BWB, EK2, Krim Shield, KVK2 and Ost Medal.
