He served on both the Eastern and Western fronts during the war, first being involved in the fall back of the Soviet Union late 1943 and early 1944. He was then transferred to Grenadier Regiment 404 who were part of the 246 Volksgrenadier Division operating in the battle of the Ardennes Forest and later the battle of Aachen. He would surrender to US forces in April 1945.

During his service he was awarded the Iron Cross Second Class, Infantry Assault Badge in Silver and the wound badge in black.
