Wehrpass SS Sturmann Otto Heimann 9/SS Panzer Division “Hohenstaufen”
Original Waffen SS wehrpass named to Otto Heimann of 9/ SS Art.Regt.9 9th SS Panzer Division “Hohenstaufen”. This particular Wehrpass has been sold to us directly from the family of the man who obtained it whilst serving with the RASC as a sergeant attached to General staff during his service during WW2. The Wehrpass was obtained in the Netherlands. He also collected a large lot of medals whilst in Germany including six DKiG’s. The reason this one and only Wehrpass was with the medals is unknown.
Otto Heimann was born on the 26th February 1925. After education Heimann joined the RAD and throughout 1942 & 1943 completed education preventing sabotage and spying alongside his regular RAD training. Heimann joined the Waffen SS on the 1st February 1943. He was originally assigned to 3./SS-Pol-Art-Ers-Abt in Amersfoort, The Netherlands. From 11th February 1943 he was enlisted into the 9th SS Panzer Division “Hohenstaufen” where the unit was first tasked for duties along the Belgian-French Canal and Atlantic defences. In late February 1944 he was moved south before being stationed in Russia for operations in April 1944. He would later return to Western Europe and was present at the invasion of Normandy and later operation market garden. It’s likely that our RASC sergeant picked up the Wehrpass in Arnhem/ Nijmegen as the 9th SS would only see combat against the US forces for the rest of the war.
Heimann was promoted during his time in the SS first beginning as Oberkannonier and later Sturmann. He had a vast amount of training on multiple weapons and was proven very efficient with Artillery as noted by his Sturmbahnfuhrer. Heimann completed weapons training with the K98K rifle, MG34 & 42, MP40, 7,5cm Artillery Gun and another gun which I do not recognise.
This is a truly superb Wehrpass, issued to one of Hitlers elite with good Normandy history. Whilst no entries are marked after February 1944, Heimann’s name does not appear in any casualties lists and with the provenance of the book coming directly from a veterans family, we can only at best assume the most likely which is his continued service with the 9th SS Pz Div until his capture in late summer 1944. The Wehrpass is in very good shape, some minor staining evident with expected service wear to the cover.
