German Army Soldbuch Grenadier Johann Müller Gren.Ers.U.Ausb.Batl.134
Original German army Soldbuch issued to Grenadier Johann Müller of Grenadier Ersatz Batalion 134 and later Lds.Schtz.Ers.Btl.17. Müller enlisted on the 29th March 1944 at 18 years old where he was initially placed in a grenadier battalion he served on the Eastern front first in the Czechslovak republic and later Austria in 1945. Müller was hospitalised after serious shrapnel injuries from either grenades or artillery on the 21st November 1944. He remained in hospital until discharged on the 16th December 1944. Four days after his discharge he was reported back to hospital, this time for a much longer period. Unfortunately Müller had serious combat PTSD. Notes on his Soldbuch at the time shows the hospital attempting to discharge him three times despite his mental state. From the 20th December 1944 until at least 27th February 1945 Müller was in hospital for psychiatric reasons. He was awarded the wound badge in Black and Silver for his injuries. Included with his pay book is a hospital travel pass, a hospital evening travel pass and a dental document. This book evidently displays the sad state of affairs for a young man in the war, a teenager experiencing PTSD, something at the time which was seen more as cowardice rather than a mental condition.
