German Army Soldbuch Gefreiter Karl Volk Pioneer.Btl.60
Original German army Soldbuch issued to Gefreiter Karl Volk who served with Pioneer Battalion 60 forming part of the XIV Army Corps. By the time he joined the unit in 1943 the unit was destroyed at Stalingrad and eventually rebuilt in Italy. Volk’s unit was involved in the defence of Italy from the initial allied invasion at Salerno where he was wounded in the eye due to Mine/ shrapnel splinters. Volk was later dispatched to Panzer-Bruckenkolonne 894 ( Heavy tank bridge unit 894) who served under the command of the 5th Panzer army during the battle of the Ardennes in 1944-45. In 1945 Volk was injured again and served the final period of the war in a field hospital in Germany. Volk was entitled to the wound badge in silver however due to the end of the war coming before his final discharge he did not receive this. Included with Volk’s Soldbuch is the citation for his only written award, that being the wound badge in black. Issued October 1943. A nice original piece worthy of further research.
